Shabnam was Pakistan's most successful Urdu film heroine. She was born as Jharna Devi - a Hindu born Bengali actress, who converted to Christianity after she married prominent musician Robin Ghosh (Aina, Sharafat, Bandish fame musician).
Shabnam is the record holder of the largest number of super hit Urdu films in Pakistan. She has the highest number of diamond jubilee Urdu films, some of them were Dosti, Anmol, Pehchan, Anaari, Talash, Uff yeh Bivian, Aaj aur Kall, Khoobsurat, Qurbani, Dehleez, Bivi ho to aisi and of course the record breaking film Aaina with its 401 weeks in Karachi's cinemas....
Shabnam stared her film career in Bengali films in Dhaka. She was introduced to Urdu films in film Chanda in 1962. Her first film in West Pakistan was Samundar in 1968. Andleeb (1969) was her first mega hit film. She got breakthrough as top actress from film Dosti in 1971. She appeared in three Punjabi films in the end of her film career but did not succeeded, then she left Pakistan to live in her native country Bangladesh. |
